The Placeholder 3000 BC

The Sumerians built one of the first civilizations and counted using a base 60 number system. They did not have a zero symbol but they used a symbol to mark an empty space between digits. It was not a number you could do math with. Instead it worked like a punctuation mark helping people tell the difference between numbers.

BABYLONIAN

Empty Space 300 BC

The Babylonians learned math from the Sumerians and improved it. They used a special symbol to show an empty spot in a number which helped them avoid big mistakes in their calculations. Even so this zero was only a placeholder. It wasn't a number. It only had meaning when it sat next to other numbers.

INDIAN

Brahmagupta's Definition 628

In 628 the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta wrote the first clear set of rules for zero as a real number in his book "Brahmasphutasiddhanta." He said that zero is what you get when you subtract a number from itself. He also showed that adding or subtracting zero leaves a number the same and that any number times zero is zero. For the first time zero was a real number not just a symbol.

ISLAMIC GOLDEN AGE

Al-Khwarizmi 820

Around 820 the Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi wrote a book that brought the Hindu Arabic number system, including zero to the Islamic world. His work on "al-jabr" gave us the word "algebra." By using zero as a tool for solving equations al-Khwarizmi helped build a base for modern algebra.

EUROPEAN

Fibonacci 1202

In 1202 Leonardo Fibonacci published "Liber Abaci," or "Book of Calculation," which brought the Hindu Arabic number system (including zero) to Europe. He showed that this system was much easier to use than Roman numerals especially for trade and math. At first many people living in Europe did not trust zero and some even called it "the devil's number." Over time Fibonacci's work changed European math forever and helped lead to calculus, modern science, and the digital age.

MATHEMATICAL PARADOX

The Forbidden Operation

Dividing by zero is where math breaks down. In normal math the problem x ÷ 0 is undefined. It does not equal infinity. It simply has no answer at all.

If a computer tries to divide by zero the program can crash. In calculus, mathematicians can only get close to it by using limits. It is the point where the rules of the math stop working.

THE EMPTY SET

In set theory zero is the the empty set written as ∅ or { }. It is the one and only set that contains nothing at all and yet it is the foundation of nearly all modern mathematics. Because everything can't exist without nothing.

A Set With Nothing Inside

The empty set has zero elements. Its size (cardinality) is exactly 0. It is the mathematical way of saying "this set is empty," but in a format that can be used in proofs and equations.

Building the Numbers

In the work of mathematician John von Neumann every counting number is built from the empty set. Zero is defined as ∅, one as {∅}, two as {∅, {∅}}, and so on. All numbers come frm nothing.

Inside Every Set

The empty set is a subset of every set that exists. No matter how big or small a set is, the empty set hides inside it. This rule keeps the set theory consistent.

Empty Is Not Nothing

An empty box is still a box. The set {∅} contains one element the empty set itself so it is not empty. This difference shows that "having nothing" is itself a real countable idea.

Contributions to Discovery

Without zero much of modern science would not exist. Once zero became accepted problems who have not been solved for thousands of years were solved.

Zero gave mathematicians a starting point for equations. Solving for an unknown means finding the value that makes one side equal zero. Without it algebra could not work.

Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz invented calculus by studying what happens as a quantity gets closer to zero. Limits, derivatives, and integrals all depend on zero .

At 0°C, we reach Absolute Zero. This is the lowest temperature that can exist in the universe. At this point the motion of every atom comes to a stop.

At this temperature matter starts to behave in strange ways. Some materials lose all electrical resistance and some liquids flow without any friction. Scientists can get very close to Absolute Zero but they can never reach it.

The Space Between

In Japanese culture, Ma (間) is not just empty space. It is a pause that means something. It is the silence between notes used for dramatic effect or to tell us something.
